Metrology (Introduction) Course
Introduction

Metrology is defined by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) as “the science of measurement, embracing both experimental and theoretical determinations at any level of uncertainty in any field of science and technology”. It establishes a common understanding of units, crucial to human activity.

This course is a mix of both theory and practical applications ideal for those with little or no previous knowledge covering the basic understanding of precision measurement.

The aim of this one day course is to provide a greater overview and understanding of metrology measurement.

  • Development and Concerns of Metrology
  • Standards and standardisation
  • Managing the metrology system
  • Elements of a measurement system
  • Units and measurement instruments

This programme uses a mixture of group discussions, pro-forma examples, information input sessions along with practical application to fully involve participants.

Participants will:

  • Understand what metrology is
  • Understand why measurement is important
  • Be able to describe structure and use of measurement systems
  • Understand measurement uncertainty
  • Understand units of measure and instruments used in various measurement parameters
