Metrology – Measurement & Calibration (Introduction) Course
Introduction

Metrology is defined by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) as “the science of measurement, embracing both experimental and theoretical determinations at any level of uncertainty in any field of science and technology”. It establishes a common understanding of units, crucial to human activity.

Measuring devices are used for many purposes: rulers measure length, thermometers measure temperature, and scales measure weight. What they all have in common is the fact that the results obtained are in numbers: 10 centimetres, degrees, or 100 grams.

Calibration is a comparison between a known measurement (the standard) and the measurement using your instrument.

This course is a mix of both theory and practical applications ideal for those with little or no previous knowledge covering the basic understanding of measurement and calibration.

The aim of this one day course is to provide a greater overview and understanding of measurement & calibration terminology and practices are understood.

  • The importance of traceability & calibration
  • Types of Standards
  • Use of measurement equipment such as; steel rules, micrometers, digital calipers, go/no go gauges and height & depth gauges
  • Equipment checks; fit for use and accuracies
  • Reading Vernier scales

This programme uses a mixture of group discussions, pro-forma examples, information input sessions along with practical application to fully involve participants.

Participants will:

  • Understand what metrology is
  • Understand why measurement is important
  • Be able to describe structure and use of measurement systems
  • Understand components of a calibration system
  • Understand the basic attributes of making good measurement
