Community Engagement

Community Engagement

We are passionate about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) engagement and ensuring we are showcasing potential career routes into industry to young people and adult learners in our local community.

We need to educate and inspire young people on, the vast opportunities available to them when you ‘make things’, the technology you can get to grips with, and the positive difference you can make in society. For example, just recently, one of our apprentices has been leading production on parts for vital ventilator equipment.

With this in mind, we have used support from the European Social Fund (ESF) to develop a number of initiatives to help prospective students to gain an insight into the 40 different apprenticeship routes that we offer across our technical academies.

  1. We have a range of engagement opportunities available to all young people wanting to explore careers across the the Engineering and Manufacturing sectors, which are detailed below or you can download our brochure below.
  3. See the brochure here

Despite the dramatic economic impact of Covid-19, there’s still lots of career opportunities for young people out there, and we’re going to help you find them through our Careers Launchpad. The Careers Launchpad has been developed and set up as an online resource that you can request access to by contacting our community engagement team.

The Careers launchpad will support you in developing your knowledge and understanding of the range of careers within engineering and to support you in developing your employability skills.

We want to cut through the media hysteria, and all the white noise, to give you and your parents/guardians all the information you’ll need to make informed decisions on the next stage of the learning journey, and how apprenticeships can deliver a £100,000 opportunity.

The Careers Launchpad includes the suite of pre recorded webinars that offer an introduction to: In-Comm Training, the 40 Trailblazer apprenticeships we deliver, and an insight into what make us one of the UK’s leading training providers.

You will be able to take an exclusive virtual tour around our state-of-the-art Training Academies, featuring dedicated CNC machining zones, the latest metrology technology and industry-leading automation.

Experts will talk you through, the Apprenticeship journey, how you can progress to secure a degree, and the world class employers you could potentially be working for such as big names like, Bridgnorth Aluminium, Doncasters and Grainger & Worrall. You could also be potentially working for  exciting SMEs, such as Billcarr, Ironbridge Gorge Museum and SDE Technology.

Two of our apprentices will also be on the webinars to give you the ‘warts and all’ view and how they have used vocational learning to get started on their career path.

We provide  our career sessions both face to face and remotely to support our schools and community in engaging with the training centres and to support in offering advice and guidance to students interested in exploring careers across engineering and manufacturing. These sessions will be developed specifically to address the needs and group size of the students involved and can include:

  • – Introduction to our training centres to include a virtual tour
  • – Careers within engineering
  • – An introduction to apprenticeships
  • – How to apply for an apprenticeship route
  • – Preparing for Interview
  • – Interview practice, we can facilitate mock interviews

At MCMT we have developed a range of STEM Challenges to engage all young people in Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths. We can support your school or organisation in preparing and launching a challenge, we can provide materials to support.

Previously we have supported the RAF Museum in Cosford, the Girlguiding in Shopshire and the Midlands and many of our local schools.

We have a number of STEM challenges that we produced previously to support in connecting young people to a range of companies and offers them a platform to demonstrate skills across engineering and manufacturing, allowing them to explore which sectors you they are most suited to.

The previous challenges were released in two parts and are linked to six local companies to support young people in exploring the various companies and

engineering sectors in their area.

We have a range of videos to support you in exploring the apprenticeship journey.

You can find out first hand what it is like to be an apprentice, you can explore more about the job roles and what this entails. You can also find out more about the recruitment process.

There is also lots of useful content to support your involvement with our STEM challenges.

  • We have developed a programme, which will give you an insight into our technical academies and the apprenticeship journey you will embark on. The programme has been developed to enable you to fully explore and gain invaluable hands on experience of potential apprenticeship progression routes.

  • During the week you will be involved in a programme of workshops. The format of delivery has been modified to allow us to reduce the number of students visiting the centre at one time. Part of the content will be accessible online, and part face to face at the centre. The units of work are linked to:

    • – Health and Safety
    • – Fluid Power
    • – EngineeringTechniques
    • – Electrical Engineering
    • – Welding and fabrication
    • – Advanced Manufacturing Techniques
    • – Business Development & HR
    • – Apprenticeship Application Process
    • – Interview Techniques
    • – Meet link businesses

By the end of the programme you will have gained key skills, knowledge and understanding to enable you to make a more informed choice. The week will support and develop your skills and knowledge across the range of sectors within Engineering and Manufacturing and also give you the key employability skills to enable you to be successful in applying for an apprenticeship, job or training course dependent on what you decide.

We are now taking bookings for our workshops that have been developed to support in raising the profile of Engineering and Manufacturing to students in and around our community at our three training academies. The workshops we run in Shropshire and Telford and Wrekin for students studying in Year 10-13 have been funded by the European Social Fund.

The workshop offer has been expanded and modified to address restrictions following on from COVID 19. We have a broad range of workshops that are deliverable both face to face and online. They have been designed to explore the range of industry sectors within engineering and manufacturing to support students in their career choices.

For further information on our workshop offer, please download the flyer from the button below:

We have started an initiative whereby we can work with students aged 15+ to train them up as STEM leaders to allow them to deliver STEM engagement to younger students at your school or organisation.

We have trialed this with the a group of Rangers at Shropshire Girl Guiding group and with a group of students at Charlton School. We have trained them to successfully deliver a set of Workshops.

For more information, please download our workshop guide to book a STEM Leaders training session.

MCMT launched the first ever “Shropshire Regional F1 in Schools” event in December 2019, and we are currently supporting schools across the region.

Each school will be partnered with one of our local manufacturers to support them during the process, and give them advice, guidance and support with developing their car, team and branding.

As you can imagine the format of the F1 in Schools Challenge has changed slightly due to current restrictions placed on events.

All schools taking part will need to register your teams, using the following link:

We are looking to expand our reach to schools connected to our three training academies this term.

If you or your school would like to get involved in the F1 in Schools, please get in touch, for more information and to contact us see the flyer attached:
